Ordos in Inner Mongolia autonomous region has been harnessing its rich agricultural resources to steadily develop a specialty dairy industry focused on mare's milk, sheep's milk, and camel's milk in recent years. This burgeoning sector not only enhances the local diet but also increases herders’ incomes.
The production of these specialty milks is primarily concentrated in the pastoral regions of Otog Banner, Otog Front Banner, Hanggin Banner, and Uxin Banner. Currently, the city boasts eight sheep milk processing units, 26 mare's milk processors and five camel milk processing units.
These specialty milks are not only vital for increasing herder incomes but also serve as nutritious natural beverages. Camel milk, for example, is rich in immunoglobulins and unsaturated fatty acids, making it ideal for those seeking to boost their immunity and further enhancing its market appeal.
Ordos has actively supported the local specialty dairy industry, nurturing a range of small but high-quality processors and producers. The city is currently home to 124 specialty dairy processing workshops and six production enterprises, involving over 1,100 farming households. From traditional products like butter, milk skin, and cheese to innovative offerings, Ordos dairy products are beloved by local consumers and have found eager markets in neighboring regions such as Shaanxi and Ningxia.
