The whistling sand dunes in Inner Mongolia have become a major draw this tourism season, attracting visitors from across China and beyond.
Located at the eastern edge of the Kubuqi Desert in Dalad Banner, Whistling Dune Bay features one of the world's few naturally occurring singing sand landscapes. On clear, dry days, friction between the high-purity quartz sand grains produces a deep, resonant sound, offering a rare immersive experience.

Since the May Day holiday, the scenic area has received 75,000 visitors, with both domestic and international numbers climbing steadily, according to the local government. Cross-provincial and inbound travel have been picking up, making it one of the hottest destinations in Inner Mongolia early this summer.
"The vast golden sand dunes are such a contrast to the rainforests of Thailand. It's healing and hard to leave," said Lekana, a tourist from Thailand.
Tourists from home and abroad have shared their experiences on social media. Beyond sand-sliding and desert off-roading, visitors enjoy stargazing and bonfire parties at night. Bookings at the area's Lotus Hotel have been tight.

Liu Zhen, director of Dalad Banner's culture and tourism bureau, said the national 5A scenic area has moved beyond traditional sightseeing by integrating activities such as desert exploration, folk performances, and study tours to meet the needs of visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
As the peak tourism season continues, visitor numbers, length of stay, and brand influence are expected to rise steadily, she added.
