Construction has officially commenced on the Inner Mongolia section of the ±800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission project on March 17 in Ordos, a landmark infrastructure initiative aimed at bolstering energy connectivity between western Inner Mongolia and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Stretching from Ordos City in Inner Mongolia to Cangzhou City in Hebei Province, the transmission line traverses Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, and Hebei. The Inner Mongolia segment begins at the Dalad ±800 kV converter station in Ordos and extends to the Inner Mongolia-Shanxi border, passing through Dalad Banner, Juungar Banner, Togtoh County, and Qingshuihe County. It includes over 255 kilometers of new DC transmission lines and 512 towers. The entire line is scheduled to be fully connected by July next year.

Notably, the project is the first in China to adopt the “dual 800” UHVDC hybrid transmission technology, setting a new benchmark in high-efficiency, long-distance power transmission.

With a total investment of approximately 17.2 billion yuan ($2.49 billion), the project is expected to drive more than 39 billion yuan ($5.66 billion) in investment across the industrial chain. Once operational, it will deliver over 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to major load centers—enough to replace 6.3 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 16.6 million tons per year.
