Blueberries have been successfully cultivated in the Kubuqi Desert through a trial project at the Kubuqi Modern Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Industrial Park in Hanggin Banner, Ordos.
Fifteen digital sunlight greenhouses covering an area of 45 mu (3 hectares) have produced clusters of blueberries, marking a breakthrough in desert farming techniques.
The facility employs digital intelligent management systems, including temperature and humidity sensors and an integrated water-fertilizer system, to maintain optimal growing conditions. While outdoor temperatures can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius, the greenhouses maintain a stable range of 15-25 degrees Celsius, ensuring the fruit meets sweetness standards.
Although the harvest was delayed by over a month due to the late start of trial planting, the technology enabled a "staggered market launch."
The project operates under an "enterprise + village collective + base + farmer" model, providing year-round employment for more than 30 local residents. Fruit picker Tuya earns approximately 200 yuan per day while also receiving village collective dividends.
Agricultural technicians will begin pruning the plants in mid-to-late March in preparation for the 2026 harvest.
