A staggering 1,000-megawatt solar power base, featuring over 190,000 meticulously arranged photovoltaic panels that form the image of a giant, galloping horse, is advancing clean energy and ecological restoration in the heart of the Kubuqi Desert in Dalad Banner, Ordos city.
Dubbed as the "Desert Horse", this project generates approximately 2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year – enough to power thousands of homes – saving about 680,000 metric tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.65 million tons annually – equivalent to planting nearly 90 million trees.

In an innovative "PV + Desert Control" mode, the vast arrays of solar panels act as a shield against the sand, slowing the wind and stabilizing the dunes beneath them. The panels provide essential shade, reducing soil water evaporation and creating a microclimate that allows drought-resistant plants to take root. To date, the project has restored 40,000 acres of desert.
This mode has also fostered a new model of economic development. By transforming degraded land into productive assets, the project involves local farmers and herders in growing crops and new vegetation, thereby creating jobs and fostering a sustainable "green economy".
The "Desert Horse" of Ordos thus offers a replicable solution for other nations facing desertification and energy shortages. As it continues to generate clean power and restore the land, this project stands as a leading model in global ecological governance.
