Famed as the birthplace of the "Hetao Man", Sala Wusu dates back to the Middle to Late Paleolithic era, approximately 70,000 to 140,000 years ago. It is one of East Asia's most significant prehistoric sites and the first in China to undergo scientific excavation, unearthing human fossils and stone tools from that period.

Discovered in the 1920s, the Sala Wusu site has yielded invaluable fossils, including human teeth and bones, alongside the diverse "Sala Wusu Fauna", featuring ancient animals like mammoths and rhinoceroses. As a national key cultural relic protection unit, it is central to studies on human evolution and ancient environments in Northern Asia.

Beyond its historical importance, Sala Wusu boasts China's largest desert canyon, stretching 34 kilometers. Formed by the meandering Sala Wusu River, a tributary of the Yellow River, the canyon's vegetation covers 88 percent of the area, creating a lush contrast with its sandy terrain. Nearby, the Batuwan Reservoir offers clear waters and scenic views of the unique intersection of the Loess Plateau, the Mu Us Desert, and the Ordos Grassland.
