Ordos Mengsu Economic Development Zone is building an integrated green industrial system combining wind, solar, hydrogen, and storage through an innovative model of green electricity consumption, recycling, and full-chain collaboration, providing the "Ordos Solution" to global energy transition.

The development zone, known as the "future factory in the desert", is igniting the engine of high-quality development with new quality productive forces, shouldering the era's responsibility of ecological priority and technological empowerment in the process of China's modernization.

The development zone, centered around the zero-carbon park, has hosted 172 companies, including 31 enterprises above the designated size, with 97 projects worth over 100 million yuan ($13.7 million). In 2024, the park's industrial output value reached 65.29 billion yuan, achieving remarkable results.

In the Ordos Zero Carbon Industrial Park, Inner Mongolia Baichuan Solar Thermal Technology Co's production workshop is bustling with activity. Sheets of ultra-clear glass undergo processes such as edging, washing, sensitizing, silver plating, and painting, transforming into solar thermal reflection mirrors, which will be shipped to solar thermal power stations in Northwest China.

Baichuan Solar Thermal is a global leader in manufacturing intelligent equipment for solar thermal concentrating mirrors and the only mass production solar thermal power manufacturer in the autonomous region. The company's annual output value has reached 400 million yuan.

"Currently, the designed production capacity of this factory is 10 million square meters of thermal mirrors per year, which can basically support a solar thermal power station with a capacity of around 2 gigawatts," said Dou Huaixin, the company's vice general manager. "The decision to establish the factory in Ordos is also due to the promising development prospects of the area. We believe that the industrial supporting facilities will further expand in the future."

Meanwhile, the first phase project of the Inner Mongolia Rongli Battery Materials Co, with a total investment of 16.5 billion yuan, is under construction in the industrial park. Since resuming work in February, the project has been progressing at full speed, with the construction of production buildings and various supporting facilities proceeding in an orderly manner. The project is expected to reach an annual output value of 400,000 metric tons, with production scheduled to start in September.

Solar thermal power generation uses mirror reflection to gather sunlight, heats molten rock inside pipes, and stores the thermal energy in tanks for power generation. Compared to photovoltaic power generation, it is more stable, easier to store, and can supplement the power supply during peak demand. Currently, 34 solar thermal power generation projects are under construction in China, with a total installed capacity of 3,300 megawatts. With tremendous development potential, the proportion of installed capacity is expected to increase significantly.
