The Wusu Domestic Waste Harmless Treatment Plant – a biogas pollution control and comprehensive utilization project in Ordos, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, with an investment of 9.32 million yuan ($1.30 million) – was put into trial operation on Aug 10.

Invested by Ordos Huanhe Environmental Protection Co in September 2023, the project includes the construction of three 500-kilowatt biogas generator sets and their supporting biogas collection system, cooling system and biogas pre-treatment system, one 2,000 kVA plant transformer, high and low voltage distribution system, unmanned monitoring system as well as living area supporting facilities.

It can generate approximately 27,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per day and deliver 9 million kWh of clean energy to the State Grid annually. This will reduce emissions by 54,000 metric tons annually, equivalent to saving nearly 4,000 tons of coal annually.

Since the trial operation of the project began, the overall operation of the generator sets has been stable, with a maximum daily power generation of 28,000 kWh. It can maximize the comprehensive utilization of landfill gas in Wusu landfill, reduce the odor generated by natural emission of biogas in the landfill area, and achieve source control of odor.

By using biogas to generate electricity, landfill waste can be harnessed for the greater good. After being integrated into the power grid, it can also generate certain economic benefits, improve the level of waste resource utilization, allow for the harmless use of resources, conserve energy, and reduce emissions.

After the official start of operations, there will be no need to build gas guiding gabions and recycling incineration systems in the landfill site. At the same time, it avoids the impact of insufficient treatment of landfill gas and the entry of harmful components from the combustion exhaust gas of the recycling incineration system into the atmosphere, effectively improving the air quality and living environment of the factory area and surrounding areas, as well as bringing about environmental, economic and social benefits.
