A total of 50 cities across China were designated as national key cities for reclaimed water utilization, including six in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, namely Hohhot, Baotou, Tongliao, Chifeng, Ordos, and Bayannuur, according to an announcement jointly issued by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Ministry of Water Resources recently.

Ordos has made outstanding achievements in managing the supply of reclaimed water for resource-dependent cities through multi-source allocation. The city has incorporated reclaimed water as a crucial water source in 126 construction projects. 

Furthermore, based on its climate, Ordos has established a model for utilizing reclaimed water for winter storage and summer irrigation, as well as explored the development of a comprehensive policy system, management structure, incentive mechanism, and evaluation system to promote the utilization of reclaimed water.
