Major progress has been made on the Changtan Open-pit Coal Mine project. Supporting facilities, such as the office building, dormitory building, coordinating building and transformer substation, have been put into use, while production facilities such as the raw coal bunker and coal washing plant are ready for testing, meaning all components of the project will be ready for trial production in July.

The Changtan Open-pit Coal Mine project, owned by Inner Mongolia Huineng Coal and Electric Group and located in Changtan village, Xuejiawan town, Juungar Banner in Ordos, started construction in November 2021 and involves a total investment of 13.1 billion yuan ($1.79 billion). Within its 58,99 square kilometers approved mining area is a reserve of nearly 1.92 billion metric tons of coal. It is designed to be in service for 83 years.

When it goes into operation, it will be able to supply 20 million tons of coal per year, relieving the coal shortage in western Inner Mongolia. In addition, it will generate an output value of 8 billion yuan and create nearly 2,000 jobs.
