In 2008, Manhan Folk Song was selected as part of the second batch of the International Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List (No: II-II-92). The art form, also known as Menghan Folk Song, has a history of nearly a hundred years and was formed and developed through the integration of different folk music. Manhan Folk Song often features one word with multiple melodies, one melody with multiple words, and is bilingual, being sung in Mongolian and Chinese.
The melodies are smooth, with a wide vocal range and passionate emotions. Accompaniments include the flute, sihu (a Chinese bowed string instrument), and yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer).
