Volunteers from diverse backgrounds ventured into the desert, armed with spades, to plant trees at a public ecological campaign titled "Plant a Tree of Friendship in Inner Mongolia", held from Sept 10 to 12 in the Engebei Ecological Demonstration Zone in Dalad Banner, Ordos.

Volunteers shared their reflections on-site, with one participant noting, "Planting trees in the desert is far more challenging than I imagined. Behind every thriving sapling and completed sand barrier lies the immense dedication of those combating desertification. I now truly appreciate how precious this oasis is and what ecological protection truly entails."  

Many participants described the campaign as an invaluable opportunity to improve the environment and expressed strong interest in future green initiatives.

The event's organizers worked to mitigate risks, developed a detailed plan with clearly defined sections and standards, and selected drought- and wind-resistant native saplings to suit the harsh conditions. Materials were efficiently distributed, and all participants received instructions and safety reminders.

The Engebei Ecological Demonstration Zone, situated at the northern edge of the Kubuqi Desert's middle section, plays a crucial role in ecological conservation in the Yellow River Basin, and serves as a priority area in the national "Three-North" shelterbelt program. Since establishing its first sand control station in 1977, generations have pioneered a green development path that integrates sand control with ecological restoration, industry development, and living improvement.

The zone has also been fostering international ecological exchanges . From 1991 to 2026, more than 16,000 volunteers from around the world have taken part in tree planting. Together they have established a unique International Youth Friendship Forest, transforming this oasis into a hub for mutual learning and idea exchange.

Looking ahead, Dalad Banner aims to build on its green legacy and elevate desert control efforts to new heights.
